Park Chan-dae elected head of Governors Association of Korea

Park Chan-dae, mayor of Incheon and a trusted political ally of President Lee Jae Myung, has been elected to head the Governors Association of Korea. As the association's new president, Park is expected to collaborate closely with the administration to achieve concrete outcomes in advancing local autonomy and decentralization. Simultaneously, there are worries that the association's credibility may suffer if it finds it challenging to adopt stances that differ from the central government's.

Park's association tenure will span one year, starting from his unanimous election at the 61st general meeting, which took place in central Seoul on Friday. Prior to his current role, Park and Lee had a strong working relationship during Lee's tenure as party leader and Park's position as floor leader. The decision for Park to assume the presidency was made swiftly, with an official confirming that while multiple governors expressed their candidacy, the election process proceeded smoothly.
