Off-grid stories during F1 mid-year break as racing returns

Formula 1's mid-season break has concluded, with the Dutch Grand Prix marking the return to racing in Zandvoort. This five-week hiatus allowed the drivers and teams to rejuvenate ahead of the challenging road to the end of the 2026 season. While no on-track action occurred during the break, there were notable developments off the track.

The 2026 silly season, known for contract formalizations, is expected to be busy. As many as 14 drivers are off contract at the end of 2026, with notable names like Mercedes champion leader Kimi Antonelli and two-time world champion Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) yet to finalize their future deals. Speculation surrounding a potential driver swap between McLaren and Red Bull remains unconfirmed, with Australia's Oscar Piastri and four-time world champion Max Verstappen being mentioned as possible candidates.

McLaren's 2026 campaign has not been without its challenges. After dominating the previous two constructors' championships, the team's results have been inconsistent this year. Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have faced reliability issues, but they have also achieved some promising results, including Piastri's podium finishes in Japan and Miami, and Norris' victory in Hungary.

Despite not being in the championship picture, Piastri remains confident in McLaren's ability to bounce back, citing the team's past successes and their strong partnership.

The mid-year break was also marked by some behind-the-scenes changes. In the midst of the break, F1 resumed its season with the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, after an unexpected hiatus due to unrest in the Middle East. This left an unexpected gap between races, but F1 managed to bring the Bahrain GP back, this time in Malaysia.

Additionally, Cadillac announced the appointment of Marcin Budkowski as their new team principal, replacing Graeme Lowdon. Budkowski, with extensive F1 experience from his time at Alpine, brings valuable expertise to the Cadillac team as they embark on their new era in Formula 1.
