N.K. leader expects 'more excellent future' in ties with Russia in message to Putin

SEOUL, Aug. 16 - North Korean leader Kim Jong-un anticipates a brighter future in North Korea's relationship with Russia, according to a message sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin, reported the North's state media on Sunday. Kim conveyed these expectations in reply to Putin's congratulatory message marking the 81st anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial occupation from 1910 to 1945, as per the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Kim expressed his pride in the prospect of further enhancing bilateral relations between North Korea and Russia, stating, "I am always proud to be able to expect a more excellent future of the bilateral relations by leading, together with you, the DPRK-Russia ties that has carried forward the history of common struggle for justice and precious traditions of friendship," the message dated Saturday revealed.

Kim firmly believed that Russia would fulfill the "sacred cause of defending the sovereignty, security interests and territorial integrity of the country," according to the KCNA. This statement comes amid the two nations strengthening their ties following the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2024, which paved the way for North Korean military assistance to Russia in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

On Friday, Kim paid a visit to a memorial honoring Soviet troops who fought against Japan during World War II, marking his third visit to the site on the occasion of Liberation Day.
