Military Digest | Remembering the Punjab Boundary Force and the shadow of Partition

On August 15, India marked its 80th year of independence, but it is crucial to acknowledge the brutal chapter of Partition that led to this momentous occasion. In August 1947, the Radcliffe Line carved through villages, homes and hearts, triggering communal violence in Punjab. To counter this crisis, a unique military experiment, the Punjab Boundary Force (PBF), was launched in an attempt to maintain order across 12 of the most violent districts.

Led by Major General T W Rees, the PBF was a mixed unit of troops from India and Pakistan. However, the force's ability to maintain order was short-lived, as communal fury proved stronger than military discipline. By the end of August, the PBF was disbanded, becoming a tragic footnote in the larger narrative of mass migration, massacres and the birth of two nations.
