Linda Mwananchi in Homa Bay: Politicians warned over incitement as police challenged to maintain order

The National Police Service issued an urgent directive on Sunday, August 16, 2026, as political gatherings took place in Homa Bay County. Officers were instructed to maintain professionalism, impartiality, and restraint while ensuring public order and safety at the Linda Mwananchi rally. This came after police intercepted 15 individuals carrying crude weapons along the Kisumu to Kericho Road on August 15, 2026, a day prior to the rally.

These suspects were allegedly planning to interfere with political activities in the area. Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga emphasized that officers must uphold the highest standards of professionalism, impartiality, and restraint while facilitating the right to peaceful assembly. Nyaga also warned politicians, organizers, and individuals against incitement, provocation, or any conduct that could lead to violence or disorder, stating that offenders would face the full force of the law.

The police arrest of the 15 suspects, found with crude weapons, followed heightened security concerns over possible attempts to disrupt the rally and other political events in Homa Bay. Tensions had been reported in the county ahead of the event, with roads blocked and groups of youths engaging in confrontations. Siaya Governor James Orengo accused police of failing to protect the Linda Mwananchi convoy during an alleged attack by goons.

The NPS reiterated their non-partisan stance, guided solely by the Constitution, the National Police Service Act, and the rule of law. The public was urged to report any suspicious activities to the police as political activities continued in Homa Bay County.
