Kyler Murray Gets Pointed Advice After Vikings Beat Giants

On August 13, Kyler Murray made his debut with the Minnesota Vikings in a preseason game against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. Murray participated sparingly, completing three of his five pass attempts for ten yards. Following his team's victory, Murray expressed his delight at returning to the field, reflecting on his recent move from the Arizona Cardinals.

ESPN NFL analyst Herm Edwards advised Murray on August 15 that the Vikings' quarterback role primarily involves running the offense. "Jordan Addison, Justin Jefferson, T.J. Hockenson, Aaron Jones—they have some outstanding skilled players. They just need a quarterback not to do too much. Just run the offense," Edwards stated. "Kyler Murray has to realize, you know what? All I got to do is run the offense. I don’t have to run around. Just sit in the pocket, get the ball out of your hand."

Edwards emphasized that Murray's objective should be to run the offense simply, avoiding unnecessary movement. "He’s trying to resurrect his career," Edwards added, noting that such advice has helped other quarterbacks, such as Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold. Meanwhile, Minnesota Vikings' general manager Nolan Teasley expressed enthusiasm about the potential of Murray in the team's offense.

"We’re really excited about what Kyler can do in this system with this level of coaching," Teasley said. "He’ll be surrounded by skill players like Justin Jefferson, T.J. Hockenson, and Jordan Addison. The offense will utilize a wide-zone scheme that will implement keepers and leverage his athleticism to get him outside of the pocket."
