Falling tree injures 4 Spanish tourists at Ayutthaya temple

On August 16, a falling tree caused injuries to four Spanish tourists at the Wat Phra Si Sanphet temple in Ayutthaya Historical Park. Three of the injured women experienced minor injuries, while a male tourist sustained serious injuries. The incident occurred around 12:30pm near a walkway at the site, when branches fell on members of a Spanish family visiting the temple. The most seriously injured tourist, 55-year-old Javier de Esteban Lucea, suffered broken ribs on his right side and two fractures to his left leg.

Rescue workers from the Phutthaisawan Foundation, Ruam Katanyu Foundation, and medical personnel from Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Hospital arrived at the scene. All four injured tourists were promptly taken to the hospital for treatment. The tourists were part of a larger Spanish family group of around 15 people who were exploring the historic site.

Officials noted that the tree's base was hollow and exhibited signs of decay, suggesting that age or deterioration may have caused the collapse. No rain or strong winds were present at the time of the incident. The base of the tree was removed using chainsaws to clear the walkway and ensure visitor safety.

Ayutthaya Governor Chuanin Wongsathitjirakan visited the hospital to check on the injured tourists and instructed relevant agencies to provide comprehensive assistance. The provincial tourism and sports office was tasked with coordinating with tourist police, while the hospital director pledged to ensure all four injured tourists received full medical care.

This incident echoes a similar event in May, where a Danish tourist was injured while jogging on a beach in Rayong when a falling pine branch pierced his leg. Rescue workers and medical staff provided immediate care before transporting him to the hospital.
