Box Office: ‘Spider-Man’ stays on top while two dino movies battle for third

Two distinct dinosaur films, "Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie" and "The End of Oak Street," vied for third place in the North American box office this weekend, but neither could dethrone "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" from its top position, nor move up to second place, which was claimed by "The Odyssey." "Paw Patrol" and "The End of Oak Street" battled for third, with the former projected to earn $20.5 million and the latter $21 million in their initial theatrical debut.

However, neither managed to surpass "Spider-Man," the film that continues to reel in audiences three weeks into its record-breaking run. "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" added $70 million from U.S. and Canadian theaters, bringing its domestic total to $785.8 million, making it the fourth-highest domestic gross ever. It also surpassed the $2 billion mark globally, the eighth film to achieve this milestone (excluding inflation) and the second-fastest to do so, only trailing "Avengers: Endgame" which did so in just 11 days in 2019.

"The Odyssey," now in its fifth weekend, maintained its second-place standing with a $23.2 million weekend haul, pushing its domestic total to $504.7 million. With $98 million from international markets, partly driven by $36.6 million from its first few days in China, Nolan's epic has now grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide. "The End of Oak Street" outperformed expectations with approximately $21 million from 3,446 locations, alongside $26 million from international screenings, totaling a $47 million global opening against an estimated $80 million budget.

The film, written and directed by David Robert Mitchell and starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, received critical acclaim with an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences were less impressed, giving it a B CinemaScore. According to PostTrak exit polls, just over half of the opening weekend audience indicated they would "definitely recommend" the movie to friends.
