Bibliotheca Alexandrina hosts sports marathon “A Safe Step… Every Step Makes a Difference”

On Saturday, August 15, 2026, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina organized the "A Safe Step... Every Step Makes a Difference" sports marathon, in collaboration with the Fund for Assistance to Victims of Human Trafficking and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The event sought to raise awareness about the perils of human trafficking and encourage community involvement in the fight against the crime.

Notable attendees included Heba al-Rafaei, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina's acting head of External Relations and Media, representing Bibliotheca Alexandrina Director Ahmed Zayed; Ambassador Amr Ramadan, chairman of the Fund's board; Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, spokesperson for the Minister of Youth and Sports; Safaa al-Sherif, Undersecretary for Alexandria's Ministry of Youth and Sports; and Amira Heikal, Deputy Governor of Alexandria.

Al-Rafaei welcomed guests and participants on behalf of Zayed, emphasizing that the Bibliotheca Alexandrina's mission encompasses more than preserving heritage and disseminating knowledge. She highlighted the library's commitment to contributing to community development and raising public awareness as a platform for dialogue and education. She encouraged young people to educate themselves about human trafficking and other human rights violations affecting vulnerable populations.

Ambassador Ramadan applauded the first "A Safe Step" marathon as a model of community cooperation, reinforcing values of participation. He stressed that combating human trafficking necessitates broad public awareness and collective efforts from various institutions. Heikal praised the Bibliotheca Alexandrina's role in supporting young people through activities and events, emphasizing the significance of initiatives that engage youth and enhance their participation in community matters.

The marathon incorporated various accompanying activities, such as awareness sessions, interactive games, and competitions, adding an interactive dimension to the messages on combating human trafficking. The evening concluded with a ceremony honoring the mini-marathon winners, followed by photographs with participants and guests.
