‘Bharat can’t simply remain a market’: Modi calls for developing drones, hypersonic tech

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his 2026 Independence Day address, emphasized the importance of self-reliance, or Aatmanirbharta, in defense. He called for India to become a global supplier of advanced defense technologies, specifically drones, counter-drone systems, and hypersonic defense technologies. The prime minister stated that relying on other countries for defense does not build national capabilities or test their strength.

Modi highlighted the changing nature of warfare, where conflicts can extend beyond borders and target critical infrastructure, data centers, and utilities. He announced 'Mission Sudarshan Chakra,' indicating that efforts to develop these advanced technologies are progressing rapidly. Modi also informed that India's defense exports have increased significantly, with arms reaching around 100 countries.

He stressed the need to upgrade civil defense systems to modern standards and create a large voluntary force to tackle contemporary threats. The prime minister also acknowledged the growing role of women in the nation's defense forces, noting the confidence and authority demonstrated by recently graduated NDA cadets.
