‘Bharat can’t simply remain a market’: Modi calls for developing drones, hypersonic tech

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of self-reliance in defence during his Independence Day address on Saturday. He urged India to become a global supplier of advanced defence technologies, including drones and hypersonic systems, asserting that "Bharat cannot simply remain a market for the world." Modi stressed that while cheaper alternatives may exist, reliance on foreign products does not foster national capabilities or test their strength.

He highlighted the nation's shift towards 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat,' where Indians are increasingly supporting local initiatives like Make in India, Swadeshi, and Vocal for Local. Modi also addressed the evolving nature of warfare, where conflicts can now target critical infrastructure such as refineries, banks, and data centers. To address this, he announced 'Mission Sudarshan Chakra,' a project aimed at enhancing the country's defense capabilities.

Furthermore, Modi informed that India's defence exports have been growing, with weapons now being supplied to approximately 100 countries. He emphasized the need for a modern civil defense system, stating that existing systems, designed for past conflicts, are now obsolete. The prime minister also highlighted the increasing role of women in the defence forces, noting that graduates from the National Defence Academy are leading the nation with great confidence.
