Awoniyi joins Onyeka at Coventry

Striker Taiwo Awoniyi is expected to sign with Coventry City, joining fellow Nigerian Frank Onyeka at the club, according to PUNCH Sports Extra. The Premier League side is close to finalizing the permanent transfer from Nottingham Forest, with both parties having reached an agreement on the deal. A medical examination is currently being conducted before Awoniyi's official announcement.

Awoniyi, who was part of Nigeria's 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning squad, is the second Super Eagles player signed by Coventry manager Frank Lampard, following Onyeka's arrival from Brentford last season. During his loan spell at Championship side Brentford, Awoniyi played 14 matches, scoring one goal and providing one assist, contributing significantly to Brentford's successful promotion campaign last season.

At Nottingham Forest for four years, Awoniyi scored 23 goals and provided six assists in 103 appearances, with 21 of his goals coming in the Premier League across 90 games. The 29-year-old had previous stints at Mainz 05, Royal Excel Mouscron, Gent, NEC Nijmegen, and FSV Frankfurt before joining Nottingham Forest in 2022. With Onyeka already settled at the club, Awoniyi is anticipated to provide valuable Premier League experience as Coventry aims to compete in the top flight this season.
