Coventry agree deal for Forest striker Awoniyi

Coventry City have reached an agreement for the signing of Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi for a fee of approximately £17 million. The deal is anticipated to be finalized prior to Coventry's return to the Premier League for their match against Arsenal on Friday. Awoniyi made history when he joined Forest from Union Berlin in 2022, becoming the club's most expensive signing at that time with a transfer fee of £17.2 million.

The 29-year-old Nigerian international has scored 23 goals in 103 appearances for Forest but has faced challenges in competing for a starting position, with Chris Wood and Igor Jesus ahead of him in the hierarchy. He missed the majority of last season's Europa League campaign and played only three matches, netting four goals in 17 appearances across all competitions.

In May 2025, Awoniyi was placed in an induced coma following a collision with a post during a game against Leicester, which resulted in intestinal rupture. Prior to Awoniyi's move, Coventry City has bolstered their squad by re-signing midfielder Gus Hamer from Sheffield United and goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, while also bringing in winger Loum Tchaouna from Burnley, defender Aurele Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt, and Ghana international Caleb Yirenkyi from Nordsjaelland.

Currently, striker Haji Wright is injured, leaving manager Frank Lampard with Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ellis Simms as the primary strikers for the team's upcoming season opener.
