At DAP congress, Sangeet urges rethink of ties with Anwar, says PM has divided coalition, empowered Umno

Wanita DAP legal bureau chief Sangeet Kaur Deo urged the party’s Central Executive Committee to reconsider its relationship with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, ahead of a vote on whether DAP should remain in the federal government. While she favored DAP’s continued participation in the government, Sangeet stated that the current coalition arrangement under Anwar had failed to unite coalition partners.

She argued that Anwar’s leadership had divided the coalition, empowered Umno, and made it impossible to ignore the party’s issues. Sangeet emphasized that DAP’s decision to stay in the government should not be solely based on political stability before the next general election but should focus on rebuilding public trust, regaining its voice, and addressing concerns.

She highlighted the need to tackle racial divisions and corruption scandals during DAP’s tenure, warning that these issues had eroded public confidence. Sangeet noted that Malaysia was more racially divided now than ever under the current government and criticized the party’s silence on corruption allegations. She questioned whether DAP had done enough to combat corruption, pointing to a so-called "corporate mafia" scandal involving alleged collusion with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the exploitation of regulatory loopholes.

Sangeet also questioned DAP’s ability to work with coalition partners, particularly Umno, which continued to attack the party despite being part of the federal government. She concluded by stating that DAP should use the next 18 months in government to address issues of concern and rebuild its credibility.
