Ashaiman, parts of Accra to face a 15-hour power outage today

Today, portions of the Greater Accra Region, including Ashaiman, will endure a 15-hour power outage as Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) conducts emergency repairs on a damaged transmission tower in the area. Scheduled repairs commence at 3:30 a.m. and are expected to conclude by 6:00 p.m. The damaged tower, located at Ashaiman Middle East, was destroyed when a fuel tanker exploded during welding activities on its tank within the Right-of-Way (RoW) of the 161kV Tema–Achimota transmission line.

GRIDCo issued a statement explaining that the emergency repairs were essential to maintain the tower's structural integrity and ensure uninterrupted transmission line reliability. The company expressed regret for inconveniencing affected customers and urged them to demonstrate patience throughout the restoration process. GRIDCo's concerns have grown regarding unauthorized activities within transmission line corridors, as such actions pose risks to lives, infrastructure, and the overall reliability of Ghana's power transmission network.

The company cited relevant regulations and a directive issued by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, which obligates individuals, businesses, and land users utilizing transmission line Rights-of-Way without authorization to cease their activities and vacate the affected zones within a month. Failure to comply could result in enforcement actions.

GRIDCo appealed for assistance from traditional authorities, landowners, businesses, local authorities, and the public in maintaining clear transmission corridors and respecting the protected infrastructure status of these areas.
