The debate began when investor Gavin Baker, on the All-In Podcast, mentioned a rumor that Amodei believes Anthropic might become the sole private player in AI.

Anthropic researcher Sholto Douglas shot back on X, asserting that the claim is false and that Anthropic's competitive edge is a matter of misconception. Amodei himself wrote in an essay that he shares concerns over economic power becoming concentrated in one company.

Baker responded, framing the debate as a choice between concentrating AI power through regulation or spreading it widely. LeCun argued for widely available and shared AI, likening it to the impact of the printing press and the internet.
