White Sox deal blow to Tigers playoff hopes as Jackson Jobe whacked

Detroit Tigers starter Jackson Jobe allowed five earned runs in the fourth inning, marking his career-worst performance at Comerica Park on Friday, Aug. 14. The 9-5 loss to the Chicago White Sox dealt a significant blow to the Tigers' playoff hopes, who now stand 60-62, trailing the White Sox by 3½ games in the American League Central.

Jobe, who had a scoreless start on Aug. 8, allowed a pair of home runs, a triple, a double, a single, and a walk in that span, ultimately yielding six earned runs over 3⅔ innings. The White Sox took advantage of Jobe's struggles, with Munetaka Murakami and Tristan Peters each hitting two-run homers and Braden Montgomery driving in three runs.

The White Sox extended their lead to 8-3 with a sixth-inning home run from Vargas and another solo blast from Murakami in the eighth. Tigers rookies Eduardo Valencia and Spencer Torkelson contributed to the early deficit, but Valencia's double in the third inning provided the Tigers' only scoring opportunity. The Tigers' playoff race remains precarious as they face the White Sox in a crucial series at Comerica Park on Saturday.
