West Kildonan Industrial residents call for speed bumps after child hit by truck

In recent days, residents of the West Kildonan Industrial neighbourhood have been advocating for the installation of speed bumps on their street, following a tragic incident where a child was hit and dragged by a truck. Katelyn Bemister, who lives near the area, stated that people frequently speed in the vicinity and are not attentive to pedestrians.

In a video supplied by a resident, the child is seen riding a bike on a sidewalk in the 500 block of North Point Boulevard when a truck strikes them and drags them several feet. The truck stopped momentarily, but as bystanders approached, the driver sped away with its tires screeching.

North Point Boulevard, located close to a park and playground, is a location of concern for the community. A resident named Ailea Kathleen Palomar echoed the sentiment that speeding is a significant issue in the neighborhood, adding that tall fences and uncontrolled intersections further exacerbate the risks for pedestrians and motorists.

Coun. Devi Sharma (Old Kildonan) confirmed that the city has been implementing traffic-calming measures in the area, including plans to reduce the speed limit on Murray Avenue from 70 km/h to 60 km/h and install a four-way stop at Mira Gate. Additionally, a stop sign on Ferrier Street and Murray Avenue has been recently added. The implementation of speed bumps and further stop signs are currently under consideration, as a traffic-calming review is also underway for North Point Boulevard between Lyra Gate and Mira Gate.
