Taliban authorities mark five years ruling Afghanistan

Over the past five years, the Taliban has ruled Afghanistan, imposing a restrictive regime on women and girls that has led to widespread discrimination, abuse, and exclusion. Celebrating the anniversary, the Taliban sought to portray itself as in control, despite international organizations and the UN warning of escalating crises in the country.

These challenges were exacerbated by the influx of Afghan refugees from neighboring Iran and Pakistan, contributing to a declining GDP per capita. While some infrastructure projects and economic opportunities have been suggested by the government, women remain banned from most jobs and public spaces, while education for girls beyond the age of 12 is prohibited.

The Committee to Protect Journalists criticized the Taliban's brutal repression of the press, with women facing particularly severe restrictions. The United Nations expressed deep concern over the Afghan people's suffering under the Taliban's policies, which have led to a humanitarian crisis, particularly affecting vulnerable groups and minorities.
