Steelers' Keeanu Benton Makes Franchise History With New Extension

The Pittsburgh Steelers and defensive lineman Keeanu Benton have reportedly agreed to a four-year, $72 million contract extension, according to The Athletic. This marks Benton as the highest-paid defensive lineman in the franchise's history. Drafted by Pittsburgh out of the University of Wisconsin in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Benton has played 51 games with the team since.

Last season, he started all 17 games and reached career highs with 51 total tackles and 5.5 sacks. Specific to tackles, he secured 25 solo and 26 assisted. He also forced a fumble during this time. Rumors circulated about seven-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Cameron Heyward considering retirement, but he recently signed a two-year extension with the Steelers in March, extending through 2027.

The Steelers appear to be preparing for Benton's eventual retirement, even as they continue to build around him. In addition to signing Benton, the team drafted Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black in 2025 and signed free agent Sebastian Joseph-Day in March. Head coach Mike McCarthy praised the defensive line's depth, stating, "I’ve never seen a D-line with this type of depth at this particular size."

He expressed excitement about this group, emphasizing the organization's adherence to the 3-4 defense's profiles, a strategy that was evident even before his arrival.
