Penang records another major healthcare-related FDI

Penang, Malaysia has attracted another significant healthcare-focused foreign direct investment (FDI), just two weeks after a German multinational chose the state for its manufacturing hub. Intuitive Surgical Inc., a leading global technology company in minimally invasive care and robotic-assisted surgery (RAS), has committed to investing over RM2 billion over five years to establish its first manufacturing facility in Penang.

The 316,000-square-foot facility, set to commence operations in 2028, will create 1,200 highly skilled jobs by 2032. Intuitive will manufacture surgical instruments and electromechanical devices for its renowned da Vinci surgical system, enhancing the company's global manufacturing network and bringing production closer to customers in the Asia-Pacific region.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow expressed pride in welcoming Intuitive to Penang, emphasizing the company's confidence in the state as a trusted manufacturing destination. He highlighted Penang's growing reputation as a medical technology (MedTech) hub in the region, noting that the state leveraged over five decades of industrial excellence to expand into advanced manufacturing sectors, including MedTech.

Penang has secured RM2.3 billion in manufacturing investments from 2021 to the first quarter of 2026, representing nearly 20% of the nation's total investments in the sector. The investments, involving 40 projects, have generated nearly 4,500 employment opportunities. Intuitive's executive vice-president and chief manufacturing and supply chain officer, Mark Brosius, stated that the investment reflects the company's commitment to the Asia-Pacific region, which is expected to become the company's largest market soon.
