MTN to build 80 new sites across the five regions of the north as part of a $1.1bn investment

MTN Ghana plans to construct 80 new network sites across the northern regions of the country as part of a $1.1 billion investment, according to a senior manager responsible for base station subsystems. Mr. Emmanuel Kwei Afutu announced the rollout during the company's 30th anniversary celebration. $380 million of the investment will be dedicated to network expansion in 2026 alone.

The new sites will be distributed across all five northern regions, with 38 in the Northern Region, 17 in the Savannah Region, 14 in the Upper East Region, 11 in the North East Region, and an additional site planned for the Upper West Region, totaling 80 sites for the north. Nationwide, MTN aims to deploy 500 new sites in 2026, describing it as one of the largest infrastructure projects in recent years.

The new coverage is expected to benefit farmers, students, businesses, and families by enabling access to markets, online learning, digital payments, and improved communication and safety, particularly in regions with security challenges. The company's financial performance in the first half of 2026 has been strong, with revenue rising 32.3% to 15 billion cedis and profit after tax increasing 46.8% to 5.1 billion cedis.

MTN Ghana's investment plan includes initiatives beyond infrastructure, such as the MTN Skills Academy and Bright Scholarship, aimed at training and supporting students across the country. The company acknowledges ongoing challenges of affordability and digital literacy and emphasizes the need for continued collaboration with government, regulators, and communities to ensure that growth benefits all Ghanaians.
