Okanagan communities rally around Bald Range wildfire evacuees

When over 18,000 residents were forced from their homes by the Bald Range wildfire, many faced the immediate challenge of finding somewhere to stay, food, and basic necessities. Volunteers from organizations like Mamas for Mamas quickly stepped in, calling for help and receiving an overwhelming response. Mike Boersma, owner of Sweet and Crusty Bake Co., donated food from his cancelled Peach Festival to the evacuees.

Volunteers provided clothing, toiletries, and free showers and hair washing. Some evacuees even lived in their cars for days, while those with pets had even fewer options. Evacuee Virginia Apps expressed frustration at the wait times for financial disaster assistance, with some people waiting for days to receive help. Despite the uncertainty, basic needs were being met at evacuation centers, including a dry place to sleep, meals, and doctors on site.

Volunteers worked tirelessly to register evacuees, organize donations, and ensure everyone's needs were met. Mamas for Mamas has received so many donations that they can no longer accept used goods, but gift cards and volunteers are still needed. The whole community came together to support the evacuees during one of their worst moments, showing an extraordinary willingness to help.
