Mumbai Celebrates 80th Independence Day With Flag Hoisting, Cultural Events And Public Initiatives

Mumbai observed India's 80th Independence Day on Saturday through flag-raising ceremonies, cultural events, and public initiatives. 'Vande Mataram' played a prominent role in the celebrations, as per this year's new protocol. The 2026 festivities also commemorated 150 years of Vande Mataram.

At Western Railway headquarters in Churchgate, General Manager Ramashray Pandey hoisted the National Flag and inspected the Railway Protection Force's ceremonial parade. Pandey honored freedom fighters and urged railway staff to continue contributing to the nation's development. The Western Railway Women's Welfare Organisation held a donation drive, providing essential utility items to the T-55 Building at Jagjivan Ram Hospital.

IIT Bombay inaugurated the day with a flag-raising near the Nandan Nilekani Main Building, accompanied by the National Song, National Anthem, and a student-led cultural performance. The institute also honored staff members with excellence awards, recognizing those who had completed 40 years of service. At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, the airport community celebrated Independence Day through performances by the Mumbai Airport Operations team, airline partners, and the CISF.

Separate programmes were organized at the Haj Committee of India in Mumbai, the Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals, and RCC Mahim D.El.Ed. College. In Thane, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the Thane Municipal Corporation's new chambers, launched electric buses, and inaugurated a vaccination drive. The celebrations showcased a blend of traditional patriotic ceremonies, cultural performances, public welfare initiatives, and community participation across Mumbai.
