Sarawak may raise transboundary haze concerns at Asean level, says deputy premier

Sarawak deputy premier Douglas Uggah Embas has indicated that the state government may bring up transboundary haze concerns at the Asean level, according to reports. The deputy premier made the statement following a meeting in Kuching, highlighting the proximity of Baram and Kuala Baram fires to Brunei.

Uggah emphasized that Malaysia is a member of the Asean Sub-Regional Ministerial Steering Committee on Transboundary Haze Pollution, providing a platform to discuss issues related to haze originating from neighboring countries. He stated that the Sarawak government would relay its concerns through relevant federal agencies, with the environment department playing a pivotal role in finding solutions.

Citing the sensitivity of Brunei to smoke from fires, Uggah pointed out that the smoke often reaches Brunei as well. In response to the haze problem, the Sarawak government has sought cloud seeding assistance in an effort to disperse the haze, as reported by Borneo Post. Additionally, Sarawak Energy Bhd has also requested cloud seeding over its hydroelectric facilities, where water levels are dwindling.

Uggah indicated that cloud seeding operations would commence when favorable conditions are met, although the air pollutant index has shown improvement. He also noted that water shortages persist in certain areas, and the social welfare department will continue to provide drinking water where necessary.
