Kerajaan saya tak pernah ketepi tuntutan Sabah, Sarawak, kata PM

Perdana Menteri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that his government had never downplayed concerns from Sabah and Sarawak during his first tenure, asserting that addressing the needs of Eastern Malaysia, including under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), is a national agenda. He stated that PKR, his political party, never viewed MA63 as an issue exclusive to Sabah and Sarawak but rather a national agenda.

Anwar believes that for a successful nation, the Peninsula must collaborate with Sabah and Sarawak to progress together, as he proclaimed during the PKR National Congress 2026 in Kuala Lumpur. He clarified that emphasizing MA63 as a national agenda does not need to be measured by political gains or the number of votes won, as the mainland populace generally does not consider such issues when casting their votes.

Anwar expressed the need for fairness and development that benefits every person in the country. He noted that there is still room for improvement in implementing MA63. This month, the Sarawak government urged Putrajaya to finalize all outstanding matters related to MA63 before December. Of the 13 issues in MA63, 5 have been resolved, 2 have been resolved temporarily, and 2 remain unresolved despite final decisions.

Four issues are still under discussion, and five are referred to the highest level in Putrajaya for consideration. Among the major issues resolved by Putrajaya is the transfer of Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd to the state of Sabah. Anwar reiterated that his government often discusses issues related to Petros Malaysia and Petronas with Premier Abang Johari Openg.

The foundation of our approach must reflect the commitment of the federal government and Petronas to ensure strong and seamless cooperation between Petronas and Petros Malaysia for future progress.
