Kakuzi expands use of digital technology in farming

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 13 - Agribusiness firm Kakuzi Plc is ramping up its digital technology adoption across its operations to enhance efficiency and bolster climate-smart farming, according to its Managing Director, Chris Flowers. The company has set up a Digital Agricultural Transformation Department, led by a Digital Agricultural Transformation Manager, to oversee the integration of agricultural technology into its operations.

This department aims to enhance farm management, decision-making, and operational performance through the use of advanced technologies.

Flowers highlighted the importance of adopting technology in response to changing weather patterns, which have become increasingly unpredictable. "As we face more and more uncertainty and unpredictability in our traditional climatic patterns, it is essential that agriculture adapts and adopts new technology," he emphasized. To support this, Kakuzi is leveraging artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics across its operations.

At its macadamia processing plant, the firm has introduced an AI-powered optical sorting system that automates the grading of macadamia nuts, aiming to improve product quality.

In addition to these technological advancements, Kakuzi is also deploying drone-based security surveillance systems in its fields. The company views the increased use of technology as a key component of its broader sustainability and climate-smart agriculture strategy, as it seeks to adapt its operations to the challenges posed by a changing climate.
