Incumbent Northern NPP Chair wins as new faces break through in party executive elections

The Northern Region of Ghana's New Patriotic Party (NPP) held elections on Saturday, August 15, resulting in a mix of continuity and change in leadership. With a high 96.8% voter turnout, 397 out of 410 delegates participated in the polls. Incumbent Chairman Mohammed Baatima Adam, also known as Samba, successfully retained his position with a comfortable 215 votes, defeating Inusah Amad (122 votes), Fuseini Musah (44 votes), and Salifu A. Rahman Mumin (5 votes).

The party saw new faces emerging in several executive roles. Ayamba Yelimagli won the race for First Vice Chairman with a significant 270 votes, ousting incumbent Iddrisu Sunday (117 votes). Abdul Rahman Mahama secured the Second Vice Chairman position unopposed. Dr Abdul Rahman Karim Kpala won the Secretary position with a wide margin of 324 votes compared to Dr Fuseini Bawah Zakaria's 60 votes.

In the Treasurer race, Husseini Abubakari Saddiq edged Mohammed Yussif Toyibu by just one vote, 175 to 174. Hajia Suraiya Manan emerged victorious in the Women’s Organiser contest with 153 votes, followed by Hajia Rashida Abdulai (105 votes), Alice Dawuni (91 votes), Hajia Zenabu Sulemana (30 votes), and Hajia Salamatu A. Rauf (8 votes).

Ibrahim Abdul Aziz won the Youth Organiser position with 170 votes, followed by Mohammed Naporo Abubakari (137 votes), Abdul Mutalib Kwayaja Yaatun (32 votes), Eliasu Iddrisu Obama (26 votes), and Mohammed Naziru Alhassan (22 votes). Salifu Abdul Rashid and Sayibu Yussif Danjumah were returned unopposed as organiser and Communication Officer, respectively.

The Nasara organiser race featured eight candidates, with Mohammed Ibrahim emerging as the winner with 128 votes. The newly elected executives will serve a four-year term and are poised to bolster the party’s regional structures and grassroots efforts in preparation for the upcoming general election.
