High school football: Week 1 flashback, Snow Canyon, Delta, Olympus, Tooele among big winners on opening night

In the opening night of the high school football season, several standout games took place around Utah. Snow Canyon, Delta, Olympus, and Tooele were among the big winners.

Snow Canyon earned an instant classic win against Spanish Fork with a 64-62 score after three overtime periods. The game featured an intense back-and-forth battle with both teams combining for 1,014 yards, mostly through the air. Snow Canyon's Parker Olson led the way with five touchdowns, including three passing touchdowns and two rushing TDs, while Spanish Fork's Hawkin Rasmussen threw six touchdowns.

In a dramatic turn of events, Spanish Fork took the lead 56-56 in the third overtime, but the UHSAA's mistake in not implementing two-point tries from the 25-yard line led to Snow Canyon's eventual victory. Snow Canyon rallied on a 12-yard TD run and a two-point conversion by Brody Lounsbury, securing the win.

Delta had a stellar season opener, starting with an impressive 29-26 win over Juab. Head coach Denton Peterson praised his team's performance, noting that they had improved significantly since their disappointing 2-8 campaign last season. Delta dominated early, leading 14-0 in the first quarter, while Juab fought back to take a 26-21 lead into the fourth quarter. Delta's Bodey Shurtz sealed the win with a one-yard touchdown run with just 4:54 left on the clock.

Tooele rallied for a last-second win against Union, overcoming a sluggish start. With 4 seconds remaining, Kami Vaenuku scored the game-winning touchdown, giving Tooele a 14-10 victory. Coach Tuli Wily-Matagi expressed pride in his team's belief in each other and their defense's clutch stand.

Defensive efforts also played a crucial role in Woods Cross and North Summit's victories. Woods Cross held Syracuse to a field goal in the red zone, securing a 27-26 win, while North Summit stopped Enterprise's two-point conversion attempt, sealing the 14-13 win. Both coaches commended their defenses for their resilience and determination.
