Galamsey will be a key issue for NPP’s 2028 campaign – Annoh-Dompreh

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) plans to prioritize illegal mining, also known as galamsey, as a central issue in their 2028 election campaign, according to Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh. The decision to focus on this matter stems from the significant threat galamsey poses to Ghana's water resources and the well-being of local communities.

Annoh-Dompreh emphasized that the party must address this issue as a matter of national importance rather than merely a political talking point. Speaking to Citi FM after the NPP's Eastern Regional elections on August 15, Annoh-Dompreh stated that galamsey will be at the core of their campaign messaging in 2028. He clarified that the renewed focus on illegal mining is not driven solely by the political significance of the issue or its recent use by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Annoh-Dompreh argued that the ongoing destruction of rivers and other water bodies makes the fight against galamsey an issue of national survival, as water is essential for life. He warned that the consequences of illegal mining extend beyond environmental degradation, threatening livelihoods and access to vital resources. Annoh-Dompreh's remarks come as illegal mining continues to be a prominent topic in Ghana's national conversation, primarily due to concerns about the pollution and destruction of major rivers and the impact on communities that rely on them.
