From Hezbollah cells to ISIS plot and Iranian attacks: How Kuwait is confronting threats on multiple fronts

Kuwait has been combating threats from Iran and its affiliated groups, including Hezbollah, Iraqi factions, and ISIS, for several months. The country's Interior Ministry recently reported foiling a plot by a Kuwaiti national linked to ISIS, who had received training in explosives and drone manufacture and intended to target a vital facility.

This came after the arrest of two minors suspected of communicating with ISIS members, who had also received explosive-making training, with the aim of attacking a religious place of worship. Analyst Ayed Al Manaa stated that such ISIS plots are not surprising, as religious lessons in mosques can be exploited by extremists. Journalist Ghanem Al Sulaimani emphasized the significant security challenges Kuwait faces, including Iranian attacks and ISIS attempts to recruit minors.

The Kuwaiti government urged parents to monitor their children's social media use and strengthen family oversight. Previously, ISIS attacked Kuwait during Ramadan 2015, killing 27 worshippers. Pro-Iranian cells were dismantled in March and April, with four cells comprising Kuwaiti and Lebanese nationals being arrested, along with plots to assassinate prominent figures.

In May, four IRGC officers were apprehended attempting to infiltrate Bubiyan Island, resulting in one member being wounded and two fleeing. 17 Iranian attacks on Kuwait occurred between July 8 and August 1, targeting power stations, military sites, and civilian facilities, with six military personnel injured and one worker killed.

Terminal 4 at Kuwait International Airport resumed limited flights after a drone attack in June killed an Indian passenger and injured 60 others.
