Europeans Seek Role in Ukraine Peace Talks Amid US Uncertainty

French, German, and British diplomats are working on a unique negotiation format for ending the Ukraine conflict, according to The New York Times. They aim to secure a seat at the table and prevent the United States from sidelining Europe. French and German leaders are spearheading the initiative, while London takes a more cautious approach, considering its ties with Washington.

The diplomats emphasized that resolving the war and future relations with Russia are vital for European security, and thus, they cannot depend solely on the United States. While the US mediates talks with Russia, Europe seeks assurances that a peace deal will involve their input. The specifics of their proposed participation model remain undisclosed.

This diplomatic activity occurs as Ukraine struggles to appoint a new ambassador to the United States. President Volodymyr Zelensky found it difficult to find a suitable candidate after dismissing Olga Stefanishyna on August 3. Zelensky offered the ambassadorship to Yulia Svyrydenko, the former Prime Minister, but she declined. Potential ambassadors are reluctant to take the role due to concerns over presidential trust.

The ambassadorial vacancy comes at a time when Ukraine seeks additional military aid from Washington, including permission to license-produce Patriot air defense missiles. Deliveries of air defense missiles from allies have dropped by two-thirds since 2025. The incoming ambassador will also coordinate communications on potential US-led peace efforts and lobby Congress for ongoing support.

The search for an ambassador is complicated by the political climate following Zelensky's recent government reshuffle, including the removal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, which sparked protests. Opposition lawmaker Yaroslav Yurchyshyn suggested that Zelensky might delay appointing a new envoy until after the US midterm elections to better gauge the political atmosphere in Washington.
