Dr. Anthony Fauci declines request to appear before a second Senate panel after GOP contempt vote

Dr. Anthony Fauci has declined to voluntarily appear before a second Senate panel after Republican majority members on the Homeland Security Committee voted to hold the infectious disease expert in contempt. A lawyer representing Fauci stated that any attempt to compel him to testify before a Senate subcommittee, following the contentious July 29 hearing, would be an impermissible harassment or degradation of the expert for political reasons.

During the July hearing, Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination 100 times, leading to a contempt vote on August 6 and a referral to the Justice Department for potential investigation into whether he had appropriately exercised his constitutional rights. Republican Sen. Rand Paul, who chairs the committee and pushed for the contempt finding, argued that the constitutional protection did not apply because Democratic President Joe Biden had issued a preemptive pardon to Fauci.

Paul, known for accusing Fauci of misleading the public during the pandemic, has consistently called for the expert to face prosecution and imprisonment. Meanwhile, Sen. Ron Johnson, chairman of the subcommittee on investigations, aimed to initiate a separate congressional probe into Fauci's role in the COVID-19 pandemic response, addressing vaccine safety and efficacy.
