Church leaders must stay non-partisan, avoid political endorsements — Cleric

Dr. Oluwaseye Yomi-Sholoye, Founder of The New Seraph Evangelical Ministries Worldwide and Iya Aladura General, has cautioned religious leaders in Nigeria to maintain their non-partisan stance and avoid endorsing political candidates. Speaking at the eighth Night of Divine Experience held in Ogun State, Yomi-Sholoye emphasized that the pulpit should be reserved for proclaiming biblical truths, advocating for justice, and offering spiritual guidance to all people, regardless of their political beliefs.

She stressed that religious leaders have a duty to uphold fairness and impartiality, particularly during elections when political groups might try to exert influence within faith communities. Yomi-Sholoye warned against using the pulpit for political endorsements, partisan campaigns, or party propaganda, stating that the role of spiritual leaders is to speak truth to power and guide their communities with impartiality.

She also cautioned against vote-buying and other forms of voter inducement, urging citizens to base their electoral decisions on the candidates' competence and proven leadership records rather than financial incentives. During the election period, Yomi-Sholoye advised Osun State voters to scrutinize candidates' past administrative performance, public leadership experiences, and proposed plans for the state, urging them to choose leaders with the ability to effectively govern and bring about meaningful development to the people.
