Batwara 1947 stumbles at box office against Awarapan 2, earns Rs 8.34 cr worldwide

Batwara 1947, a Sunny Deol-starrer film, premiered alongside Awarapan 2 on August 14, 2022, and failed to meet expectations at the box office. Despite the film's focus on the India-Pakistan Partition and the reunion of its cast, it was unable to attract audiences to theatres. According to Sacnilk, Batwara 1947 earned Rs 5.75 crore in its opening day, grossing Rs 6.48 crore in India and Rs 1.50 crore overseas, amounting to a worldwide total of Rs 8.34 crore.

Occupancy on Day 1 was reported at a disappointing 15%. In contrast, Awarapan 2 opened on a stronger note, with its worldwide collection reaching over Rs 27 crore on its first day. The original Batwara 1947 was intended to explore the human cost of the 1947 Partition of India, and its title change from Lahore 1947 was reportedly due to concerns over political sensitivities.

Sunny Deol's previous comeback films, Gadar 2 and Border 2, also performed well at the box office. However, Batwara 1947 has struggled to generate the same level of interest. With a budget of Rs 150 crore, the film's current box office performance presents a significant challenge.
