Arsenal, Man City set for 2026 Community Shield clash Sunday

Arsenal and Manchester City will clash on Sunday, August 16, in the 2026 FA Community Shield, the traditional prelude to the 2026/27 Premier League season. The reigning champions, Arsenal, will face Manchester City, who clinched the FA Cup in May by defeating Chelsea. Established in 1908, the Community Shield is an annual fixture between the Premier League's champions and the FA Cup winners. This will be the first encounter between Arsenal and City since their Premier League match in April, where City emerged victorious 2-1. They also met in the 2026 EFL Cup final, with City prevailing 2-0. Their last Community Shield appearance was in 2023, where Arsenal triumphed 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

The primary prize for the winner is the first major domestic silverware of the new season, presented in a shield bearing engraved names of former winners. However, past victories at the Community Shield haven't always led to Premier League triumphs. Only once in the last 16 years has a club secured both titles in the same campaign, achieved by Manchester City in 2018/19.

Since the Premier League's inception in 1992, the double has been accomplished eight times, with Manchester United having done so four times and Chelsea twice, in 2005/06 and 2009/10. Interestingly, the losing side at the Community Shield has more often gone on to win the Premier League, with 10 instances compared to the winners' eight since 1992.
