‘Our Independence Should Also Extend To Food We Consume’: FDA Chief Tukaram Mundhe - VIDEO

On the 80th Independence Day of India, Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe expressed his desire for citizens to have a choice when it comes to the food they consume, considering it a part of their independence. Speaking to reporters, he wished the nation continued progress and emphasized the importance of choosing food that is safe and of high quality over just selecting tasty options.

Mundhe stated, "If we follow this approach, we will remain healthy. If we are healthy, our country will also be healthy and we will be able to progress."

The FDA, under Mundhe's leadership, has been taking various steps to promote healthier eating habits. One such initiative includes replacing fast food in school canteens with nutritious alternatives. Additionally, around 300 schools across Maharashtra, including Mumbai, are undergoing food safety and nutrition training. The training focuses on educating school nutrition committees about the dietary needs of students from different age groups, suitable food sources to meet those needs, and best practices for food preparation and serving.

Senior FDA officials are conducting these sessions to provide guidance on maintaining food safety and hygiene.

In a recent crackdown, FDA officials have also conducted raids on food outlets and institutions, suspending licenses for establishments that failed to meet hygiene standards and food safety regulations. By enforcing restrictions on the sale of junk food and items high in added sugar and salt near schools, the FDA is striving to create a healthier environment for students.
