A personal trainer who specializes in seniors says this 5-minute workout is great for improving bone density and protecting your joints

As we age, bone density often decreases, particularly in women who can lose up to 20% of their bone density after menopause. If left unmanaged, this can result in osteoporosis, making bones fragile and susceptible to fractures from falls. The good news is that a simple solution exists to either slow down or even reverse this loss.

Bones are living tissues that adapt to physical stress, so strength training exercises can help. Janet Osbourne, a personal trainer specializing in seniors, has shared a quick five-minute workout that can be added to your routine.

For this workout, all you need is a sturdy chair and either weights or bodyweight. If using weights, a set of adjustable dumbbells would be ideal, but bodyweight will still provide an excellent workout. Ensure the chair is stable and lacks wheels. While generally safe, consult a professional if you're currently dealing with an injury.

The workout consists of five exercises:

1. 50 dumbbell chair taps: Hold a dumbbell in each hand while standing in front of the chair. Plant your feet firmly on the floor and engage your core. Lift one leg to tap your foot on the chair, then return to the starting position. Alternate sides until you've completed 50 reps.

2. 40 sit-to-stand squats: Perform these with or without dumbbells. Stand in front of the chair, bend your knees, and push your butt back to lower down, stopping just short of sitting down. Push through your feet to return to the starting position.

3. 30 heel raises: Stand behind the chair, holding onto the backrest for support. Raise yourself onto your tiptoes, complete the calf raise, and then lower your heels down to the floor with a firm landing. This gentle impact will stimulate your bones.

4. 20 bent-over rows: Sit on the chair, hinge your torso forward slightly, and hold a dumbbell in each hand. Extend your arms toward the floor. Bend at your elbows, row the dumbbells up toward your torso, pause, then slowly lower them back to your starting position.

5. 10 overhead presses: Sit in the chair with your back straight and core engaged. Starting with your dumbbells at your shoulders, raise them toward the ceiling, straightening your arms. Pause at the top, then lower the dumbbells back to your starting position.

The workout also includes 20 seconds of foot taps, which can be done without weights. Sit on the edge of the chair, hold onto the seat for support, and quickly lift and lower your feet, tapping them on the ground. This simple exercise adds a little bone-friendly impact.

By incorporating these exercises into your routine, you'll be engaging in a full strength training workout. The squats and heel raises will strengthen your hip sockets and femurs, while seated rows and overhead presses will help strengthen your spine. These exercises not only build bone strength but also enhance the surrounding muscle groups, tendons, and connective tissues that stabilize your joints.

This can improve overall stability, reducing the risk of falls and fractures. Even though the workout is low impact, the firm landings and resistance from the dumbbells help stimulate bone growth without overstraining aging joints.
