Wildfire forces evacuation of 1,800 people in North Rhine-Westphalia

A forest fire near Hürtgenwald prompted the evacuation of 1,800 residents in the early hours of Thursday night. Rescue efforts persisted into Friday, with firefighters, Bundeswehr personnel and aerial support working tirelessly to contain the blaze. The inhabitants of the Gey district within Hürtgenwald were ordered to leave their homes, as confirmed by a district spokeswoman to German news outlets.

Approximately 1,800 people reside in Gey, which is near the Belgian border. The fire has consumed hundreds of hectares of forest, with the flames only 200 meters from the Gey district at one point. Military tanks and helicopters were utilized in the firefighting efforts, alongside assistance from local farmers and volunteers. The primary school and a sports club were set up as points of contact for the evacuees.

Initial assessments suggested the fire was farther away, but worsening weather conditions later proved otherwise. The origin of the fire remains unknown, as does the potential for further evacuations in nearby Großhau, though no orders have been issued there yet. The threat of the fire's spread continues to be a concern for local authorities.

Hürtgenwald, situated west of North Rhine-Westphalia near Belgium, has a population of just under 9,000 people. The district of Hürtgenwald-Gey is about ten kilometers from Düren, a city with a population of 94,000.
