Over 2,000 evacuated in western Germany due to raging wildfire near Belgian border

More than 2,000 residents were evacuated from their homes in the village of Gey, located in western Germany, following a wildfire that threatened to encroach upon their community. The evacuation took place early Friday morning, at approximately 4:00 a.m., when authorities instructed residents to depart immediately and travel to an assistance center set up at a nearby village's primary school. Authorities advised evacuees to bring only essential belongings, identification documents, and any necessary medications.

Mona Neubaur, the deputy premier of North Rhine-Westphalia state, expressed concern over the severity of the situation, stating that the forest fire risk posed a significant threat to the local community. Mayor Stephan Cranen confirmed that the evacuation was complete, but emphasized that the situation remained critical, with the flames now approximately 300 meters away from the village.

Cranen also reported that one of the uncontrolled wildfires had spread overnight towards a former munitions depot in the neighboring town of Dueren, where unexploded World War Two ammunition remains in parts of the surrounding forest.

The ongoing battle against the wildfire involved the assistance of two German army tanks, which aided firefighters by clearing difficult-to-reach access routes through the heavily impacted forest area. As of Friday, about 300 hectares were ablaze, highlighting the widespread impact of the blaze. Due to the region's dry conditions and high fire risks, large portions of Germany continue to grapple with these challenges, necessitating ongoing vigilance and coordinated efforts to combat the persistent threat of forest fires.
