Hundreds evacuated as wildfire spreads in western Germany

Around 1,800 residents were forced to evacuate their homes in the western German district of Huertgenwald over the weekend as a wildfire rapidly expanded, officials reported on Friday. The blaze, which had already grown from 25 hectares to 300 hectares by Friday morning, prompted authorities to deploy a helicopter and army equipment to combat the flames.

The evacuation order applied to a district situated near the Belgian and Dutch borders. Residents were instructed to gather only essential personal belongings as the fire approached, according to a local district spokesman. Around 300 emergency services personnel have been mobilized to aid in extinguishing the fire, and two army tanks are also contributing to the effort.

Firebreaks have been established in the forest to prevent the fire from spreading further. The region has been grappling with a series of heatwaves and droughts this summer, a trend that has led to numerous wildfires across Europe, including Germany. In late June, Germany witnessed its highest temperature in three consecutive days, reaching 41.7°C.
