Suparco unveils name of Pakistan’s first lunar rover – Jinnah-I

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistan's inaugural lunar rover, named Jinnah-1, will embark on a mission to the Moon's southernmost point in 2029, according to the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco). The national space agency officially announced the rover's name Thursday following a nationwide contest that gathered approximately 4,000 entries.

The rover's objectives include studying the lunar surface's geology, plasma, and radiation environment, as well as conducting experiments for future lunar exploration endeavors. The name, Jinnah-1, was selected from the top seven proposals submitted, with 17-year-old Tayyab Karim from Bahawalnagar chosen via a random draw. The naming honors Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, a founding father of Pakistan, symbolizing the nation's aspirations to enhance its space and scientific capabilities.

Pakistan's participation in China's Chang'e-8 lunar program began in 2024, marking a substantial advancement in space technology collaboration between the two countries. The lunar south pole has become a focal point for global space exploration due to its scientific promise, with India's successful Chandrayaan-3 mission near the region in 2023, alongside ongoing missions from the United States and China within their respective lunar initiatives.
