Sukhbir Badal’s first reaction after Nanded attack

Sukhbir Singh Badal, the Shiromani Akali Dal chief and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, delivered his initial reaction to the attack at a gurdwara in Nanded, Maharashtra, on Friday. He emphasized that the incident was intended to disrupt peace in Punjab and reaffirmed his resolve not to be deterred. "Their mission is to take control of the situation in Punjab and disturb the peace, which, as President of Akali Dal, I will never allow," Badal stated.

He further noted that the attacks occurred at revered locations, asserting, "Both times they attacked me in the holiest places." Badal reiterated his unwavering commitment to preserving Punjab's brotherhood and pride, stating that the party was prepared to make any sacrifice for the state's progress and communal harmony. The incident in Nanded unfolded on Thursday afternoon when Badal was attacked with a kirpan at Gurdwara Mata Sahib Devan Ji Mugat, just outside the city.

The 62-year-old assailant, identified as Jaspal Singh, was apprehended by the Maharashtra Police. He suffered a hand injury and underwent surgery on Friday for tendon and nerve damage; doctors declared him stable. The attack prompted Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, to initiate an investigation into the matter. Political and religious leaders, including the BJP and the Akal Takht, condemned the violence.

The incident has heightened political focus on Punjab, as the Shiromani Akali Dal gears up for the state's upcoming elections. Badal reportedly met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 7, fueling speculation about a potential new collaboration between the SAD and BJP.
