Scoop: Key W.H. national security aide Andy Baker is departing

White House deputy national security adviser Andy Baker is stepping down from his role in the coming weeks. Baker, who also served as national security advisor to Vice President Vance, was a key figure in the administration's foreign policy and national security decision-making process over the past 18 months. He was personally involved in negotiations with Iran this year.

Cliff Sims succeeded Baker as Vance's national security adviser earlier this summer and will continue in that role, while Mike Needham will remain as White House deputy national security adviser.

Baker expressed his pride in the achievements made during his tenure and gratitude to the President, Vice President, and Secretary Rubio in a statement to Axios. He mentioned his decision to spend more time with his family as the reason for his departure. A source close to Baker revealed that he had planned to stay on months longer than expected to ensure a smooth transition to Sims and Needham.

Baker's colleagues praised his abilities and contributions to the administration. Vance described him as an "exceptionally gifted, deeply thoughtful advisor" who has been an "indispensable member" of the national security team. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called Baker "an invaluable asset and key member" of the President's national security team.

Mike Needham described him as a "brilliant foreign policy mind and close friend." Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff also praised Baker for his tireless efforts to put America first and secure deals for the President globally.
