President Droupadi Murmu to address nation on eve of 80th Independence Day

India's 80th Independence Day will be commemorated on August 14, 2026, with President Droupadi Murmu delivering a special address to the nation. This annual event, held ahead of the main celebrations at the Red Fort in New Delhi, provides an opportunity for the President to outline the country's progress and set the tone for the festivities.

President Murmu is set to address the public at 7 pm on the eve of the Independence Day celebrations. The main event, however, will occur at the Red Fort, where the Prime Minister will hoist the national flag and deliver a speech to the nation on August 15.

Last year's Independence Day eve speech provided some insight into President Murmu's vision for the country. She stated that India is on the path to self-reliance and is progressing with great confidence. The President cited a GDP growth rate of 6.5 percent in the previous fiscal year, reinforcing India's position as the world's fastest-growing major economy.

Moreover, President Murmu highlighted the completion of the rail link in the Kashmir Valley as a significant achievement. This project is expected to boost trade and tourism in the region. Additionally, she emphasized India's strides in self-reliance within the defense sector. The President specifically mentioned "Operation Sindoor" as a test case of the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission in defense manufacturing.

She concluded that the country's indigenous manufacturing has reached critical levels, enabling India to meet many of its security requirements independently.
