Palestinians besieged in West Bank village fear Israeli settlers will seize their homes

In the West Bank town of Qusra, Palestinians are facing a growing fear as Israeli settlers move in and threaten their homes. Qusai Abu Rida, a resident of Qusra, watched helplessly as settlers dismantled a tent erected in front of his house and retreated to a nearby valley. The army has taken positions around Abu Rida's home and those of two other families, but the settlers remain close enough to potentially storm the residences once the military departs.

Activists have begun delivering food and water to the besieged families, but the cycle of settlers being removed and returning has left Abu Rida frustrated. This situation is part of a series of settler violence incidents in the occupied West Bank, a region seized by Israel in the 1967 Middle East conflict. Israel's military claims the village is a closed military zone, but rights groups and Palestinians dispute this assertion.

The West Bank has become increasingly dangerous for Palestinians as Israel has approved over 100 new settlements under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's leadership. Netanyahu's government has largely dismissed concerns about settler violence as overblown, despite repeated attacks by extremists on Palestinian towns, homes, mosques, and cars.

In Qusra, the standoff began on Sunday when settlers blocked the doors to three houses, preventing occupants from leaving. Israeli troops intervened multiple times, but the settlers continued to occupy the area. The Israeli Defense Minister has transferred enforcement powers against settlers from the army to the Israeli government, signaling a potential escalation in the already tense situation.
