Nigel Farage beats Count Binface in widely mocked election

Clacton-on-Sea, England (AP) — Nigel Farage secured his seat in Parliament on Friday, defeating a lineup of unconventional candidates, notably Count Binface, in a special election that mainstream parties deemed a farce. Farage, the leader of the anti-immigration Reform UK party, is widely perceived as a potential future prime minister.

He resigned from his previous seat in July amid an investigation into an alleged 5 million pound ($6.7 million) gift from an overseas crypto billionaire, which he denies receiving. Farage ran again to demonstrate his continued voter support, securing 63% of the vote on the warmest day of the year. Binface, known for challenging various political figures, garnered about 27% of the vote in a field of 34 candidates, many of them jesters.

Farage described the result as an "overwhelming win" that increased his share compared to the previous election. However, the election's narrow field of participants and Farage's ongoing popularity in the constituency make it difficult to draw definitive conclusions. The victory will see Farage return to the House of Commons, but his return faces a parliamentary watchdog investigation suspended during his resignation.

If found guilty, Farage could face another election. Despite the election's results, Farage still faces scrutiny over undisclosed donations and his financial ties with George Cottrell, a former prisoner involved in financial fraud.
