New homes for 18 families in Cape Town's Elsies River project

In Cape Town's Elsies River area, 18 new homes have been officially handed over to 18 local families, as part of the Elsies River Infill Housing Project. This project, spread across six sites in the region, aims to provide homes to a total of 724 qualifying families and beneficiaries. The sizes of the six sites vary, with the smallest accommodating just nine units and the largest up to 303.

Councillor Carl Pophaim, the Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, addressed the challenges faced during construction, including safety concerns that temporarily disrupted progress. However, with additional support from City Law Enforcement, construction was able to continue, resulting in the successful handover of homes this week.

Pophaim acknowledged Cape Town's significant housing demands, emphasizing that addressing these needs cannot be ignored. He stressed the importance of utilizing available land and resources efficiently to ensure a steady supply of housing opportunities for eligible residents throughout the city. Pophaim highlighted the city's commitment to maintaining the integrity of the housing allocation process, ensuring fair and transparent distribution of homes in accordance with the Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register.

Pophaim affirmed that this handover represents more than just the transfer of a structure; it marks the beginning of a new chapter for the families receiving their homes. He expressed confidence in the ongoing construction efforts, stating that more homes will be delivered as the project progresses.

During the handover ceremony, Pophaim was joined by Ward Councillor Beverley Van Reenen and Subcouncil Chairperson Franchesca Walker. The city's housing beneficiaries are carefully selected through the Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure a fair, transparent, and law-abiding distribution that prevents queue jumping and complies with South African law.
