Suliman Carrim faces criminal charges from Madlanga Commission after repeated absences

The Madlanga Commission announced it would be bringing criminal charges against North West businessman Suliman Carrim for repeatedly failing to appear in court. Carrim was scheduled to testify before the inquiry on Friday, four months after he collapsed at a gym following a heart attack. Chair Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga instructed his secretary, Dr Nolitha Vukuza, to initiate the legal process, emphasizing the commission's commitment to following its protocols.

Madlanga stressed the importance of preserving the inquiry's credibility, warning that ignoring this step could discourage future witnesses from testifying. The commission is not anticipated to engage with Carrim further, suggesting his absence is likely permanent. Carrim's testimony has been postponed five times since April, primarily due to his doctors' concerns over his health.

However, his repeated delays have raised doubts among observers, who pointed to evidence suggesting Carrim was seen at a restaurant in Cape Town while supposedly too ill to testify. In response, the commission has mandated an independent medical examination to determine Carrim's true medical status before he can reappear. The outcome of his upcoming appearance may clarify his situation or lead to another dispute over his medical condition and the allegations regarding his absence from the proceedings.
