NATO Fighter Jets Shoot Down Drone in Latvian Airspace

Early Friday morning, August 14, NATO fighter jets successfully neutralized a drone that had breached Latvian airspace, Latvia's armed forces announced. The incident took place in the Balvi Municipality, located in eastern Latvia, according to Latvia's public broadcaster LSM. Residents of several municipalities, including Balvi, Rēzekne, Preiļi, and Augšdaugava, received orange emergency alerts via the mobile early-warning system shortly before 4 a.m., signaling an airspace threat.

Following the initial alarm, a yellow alert was issued to residents of Alūksne Municipality at 4 a.m. The NATO fighter jets, engaged in the Baltic Air Policing mission, were dispatched to address the threat. At 4:42 a.m., the Latvian National Armed Forces declared that the risk had subsided. The Latvian military reaffirmed its commitment to continuously monitor the nation's airspace in collaboration with NATO allies, ensuring a prompt response to any forthcoming dangers.

The incident unfolded during a period of heightened regional security apprehensions. On the same evening, a fire broke out at the Ust-Luga port in northwestern Russia, believed to be the result of a reported drone attack.
